Ship Repair Training Incentive Scheme (SRTIS)

Objective

To attract people of suitable calibre to receive training and become skilled workers to increase the workforce supply in the ship repair industry, in order to maintain the quality repair service for both visiting and local vessels

Students who have completed a designated course offered by recognised training institute; or
Workers with relevant working experience from other industries

Successful applicants will be eligible to a financial incentive of HK$4,000 per month for not more than 12 months during a continuous employment.

Remark:

At present, the designated courses are offered by the Vocational Education Council, as shown in the table above.
After completing any of the designated courses, a student must join the ship repair industry by entering into an apprenticeship contract with a local shipyard to receive on-the-job ship repair training.

Level of subsidy

Successful applicants will receive a financial incentive of HK$5,000 per month (with effect from 1 December 2023) during the apprenticeship
For a period of not more than 36 months

Procedures for application

The Scheme is operated by VTC. Interested persons may submit the completed applications with copies of all supporting documents to Office of the Director of Apprenticeship
The Application Form can be obtained from the Office of the Director of Apprenticeship or downloaded from the website of the Office of the Director of Apprenticeship

Eligibility Criteria

Applicant must −

be a Hong Kong permanent resident
complete a designated or re−training course in or after a specified year
enter into an apprenticeship contract with a local shipyard to receive on−the−job ship repair training, or have been employed by a local shipyard as a skilled ship repair worker; and
not be in employment with the ship repair industry within 24 months prior to the application

Application from a final year student of the designated course may also be considered if he/she has been offered a recognised apprenticeship by a local shipyard at the time of application

Points to Note

Irrespective of funding source, the applicant must not receive double benefits, i.e. any other similar incentive, subsidy or financial assistance for encouraging citizens to take on re−training courses and employment or to continue with employment in any industry during the apprenticeship or employment periods for which he/she is entitled to the incentive under the Scheme
Re−trained workers should be able to produce relevant documents or be invited to attend trade tests to prove his/her professional qualifications or skills
