Hong Kong is an international business, trade and finance centre in the Asia-Pacific region with well-developed transport infrastructure. It is one of the world's most densely populated cities and has to face unique challenges in providing a safe, efficient and reliable transport system to meet the economic, social and recreational needs of the community.
At present, Hong Kong has about 210 km of railway network, about 1,977 km of roads, three immersed-tube cross-harbour tunnels, nine road tunnels and three rail harbour crossings.
To enhance Hong Kong's continual economic development, we are spending around US$1.3 billion on two railway projects for completion between 2007 and 2009 (Table 1). Six railway projects are now under planning or review (Table 2). A number of major highway projects will also be undertaken in the next decade to form an integrated transport system to complement the railway development in Hong Kong (Table 3).
