Following the relaxation of different anti-epidemic measures, the designated taxi fleet (designated fleet) set up by the Government and the taxi industry will cease to operate from January 14 (Saturday).
A Government spokesman said today (January 11), "The designated fleet has commenced operation since February 18, 2022, as arranged by the Government, to provide COVID-19 patients with free transport services between their residences and the designated clinics of the Hospital Authority, private hospitals or other medical/isolation facilities. As of January 10, 2023, the designated fleet has completed over 370 000 trips and its operation has been smooth since its commencement. The Government thanks the taxi industry for co-operating with the Government to provide the designated fleet service for infected persons in the past 11 months."
Following three years of the epidemic in Hong Kong, the community immunity against COVID-19 has reached a very high level due to the increased vaccination rate and the fifth wave of epidemic. The risk posed by COVID-19 to local public health has changed. At present, isolation orders issued by the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health (DH) allow infected persons to go out for medical consultation.
"After the termination of the designated taxi services, infected persons who travel between the place of isolation and hospitals or clinics for medical consultation should wear a well-fitted surgical mask, a KN95/KF94 mask or a respirator (such as a N95 mask) during the journey. They should avoid using crowded public transportation or staying in public areas on the way. There is no need for infected persons to inform the DH when going out for medical consultation," the spokesman added.
The Government calls on private healthcare facilities to provide medical services to infected persons in order to alleviate the burden on the public healthcare system. Infected persons with mild symptoms who do not belong to a high-risk group such as the elderly should consider using private medical services.
